BUFFALO, NY and WASHINGTON, D.C.
Thomas Francis McGorray was born in Buffalo NY., in November 1936.
He attended Holy Spirit Grammar School, and Fallon High School, graduating seventh in his class.
He graduated from Oblate College in Washington, D.C., majoring in Philosophy and attended graduate school at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.


U.S. NAVY
Thom entered Officers Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and was commissioned as a Naval Officer. Thom trained for 10 weeks at Naval Air Station Pensacola. He also trained Naval Air Station Corpus Christie to become a navigator.
Thom served as a Naval Aviator from 1960 to 1963. During that time, he was stationed at Brunswick Naval Air Station in Maine and Rota, Spain during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
He then attended Naval Air Intelligence School and reported to his VP Squadron in Brunswick, Maine.

FBI
Thom entered the FBI in September 1963 as a Special Agent and served in Atlanta, Ga., Monterey Calif., Washington D C., New Haven, Ct., FBIHQ (SOG) Headquarters, Tucson, AZ.(SRA), and Sacramento, Calif. He retired from the Bureau in June 1987, and currently operates three businesses out of Tucson, AZ. Thom was an FBI Special Agent for 24 years. He worked Civil Rights, ITSMV, and K. K. Klan cases in Atlanta. He studied Polish for a year at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA, and then worked Espionage cases in WDC. He was instrumental in solving the Alex Rackley murder case in New Haven, in 1969 which lead to the convictions of three, and the indictments of several national members of the Black Panther Party, including Bobby Seal. Thom received several incentive awards and letters of Commendation from FBI Directors J. Edgar Hoover, and Clarence Kelley for his outstanding work in Terrorist Matters, Extremist Matters, and Espionage. He served the Bureau as the Senior Supervisory Agent in Charge in Tucson, and as a Supervisor at FBI Headquarters, and Sacramento, Calif. He was a Bureau Firearms Instructor, Hostage Negotiator, and Police (Sex Crimes) instructor. He currently holds Private Investigator's licenses in California and Arizona and conducts Federal background investigations (BICS) for the FBI.

Thom uses an iMac, a Mac Pro Laptop. Deskjet 855 Color Printer and Mustek Scanner. Software interest: Photoshop, Pagemaker, TypeStyler, Illustrator, ColorIt, Word, Wordperfect, Write Now, Quicken, MacInTax, Excel, Works, Hypercard, Netscape, Eudora, Newswatcher, Fetch, etc. He has taught MacIntosh computer classes to adults at Catalina Foothill School and Genealogy on the computer using PAF, Reunion, and Family TreeMaker software. He runs three listserves (including xgboys, for 2900 retired FBI agents. He specializes in Web Page Design and Desk Top Publishing using PageMaker and In Design.
Thom has taught several computer courses at Catalina Foothills HS. ADULT EDUCATION : Past courses taught: Internet Basics, Internet Software, Netscape, Eudora, News Watcher, HTML Scripting, Home Page Design, Genealogy on the Internet, Intermediate Claris Works (3.0), Quicken (5.0). Desk Top Publishing (Pagemaker 5.0), and 101 Things to do with a Mac He is the "Apple Ambassador" for the Tucson Mac Users Group (TMUG), edited their monthly newsletter for 13 years, and is active in several special interest groups.

Thom has been a singer with the Barbershoppers (SPEBSQSA) in Tucson and has been a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Quartet Singing in America. (SPEBSQSA) for 55 years He sang with the New Haven, Sacramento, and Tucson Chapters, and with several Quartets, including "Sounds of the Motherlode," AND "Chord-inary Guys." He is the founder of the Nevada-Placer chapter located in Auburn, CA. He is a member of the Diocesan Choral, and the St Elizabeth's special choir. He also sings first tenor with the Son's of Orpheus and took part in concerts in Germany, Hungary, Austria (2000), the Uk (2002) and Italy (2004), the Vatican and Notre Dame in Paris.
Since 1987, Thom has edited three newsletters, "Sounds of the Mother Lode" and "Tucson Sunshine Sayings." This latter publication has won regional honors for its originality and humor. He also edited a quarterly newsletter for the Diocese of Tucson called "Pathways" which went out to 1000 readers and does a monthly for the Former Special Agents of the FBI in southern Arizona. called "Tucson Credentials."

GENEALOGY
Thom has spent the past thirty years working on the McGorray Family tree and the Klein family tree, specializing in Ireland, Scotland, and Germany. He has visited the Mormon library in Salt Lake City. He traveled to Ireland in September of 1994 for additional information and located several relatives in County Tyrone, in Northern Ireland. He has identified 250 McGorry families in the United States under four different spellings. He traveled to Germany in the summer of 2000 and to Scotland.

SPORTS INTERESTS
Thom is an avid sports enthusiast who has played handball most of his life. Other sports of interest include tennis, baseball, softball, football, basketball, and hockey. He coached little league hockey in Washington DC area and Tucson, Arizona.

SOCIETY
Thom has been a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI since his retirement in 1987. He has served as Chairman and Vice Chairman for the Tucson Chapter and has served as an officer for the past twenty years and is currently Secretary.. He edits their monthly newsletter "Tucson Credentials" and was the Co-Chairman for the Society's Western Regional Conference that was held in Tucson in April of 1998. He served as Chairman of the Internet Committee and originated the Society's extensive home page on the Internet. He also maintains the xgboys mailing list using the Simplelists platform. The list has more than 2,800 members. Thom has served on the Long-Range Planning Committee, the Communications Committee, the Information Committee, and the Grapevine Committee. He was a Trustee for three years and received the Humanitarian Award. He attended 22 Society Conventions over the years.

FAMILY
Thom is married to Carolyn. Thom's seven children are; Kathy Gallagher, of Tucson, AZ; Meg Panknin of Tucson, AZ; Thomas, Jr. of Peoria, AZ; Lara Markes of Tucson, AZ; Theresa Yungkurth of Tucson, AZ; Maureen Dykinga of Seattle, WA; and, the late Mathew McGorray. He currently has thirteen grandchildren. His sister, Patricia Burk, brother Richard, and brother John J. are deceased.
